Ok, this is going to be brief because I am so strapped for time at the moment that if John Lennon himself walked up to me and said, “Alright Rob, I’m back from the dead for half an hour, fancy a jam?” I would almost certainly have to reply, “Sorry John mate, got this 5000 word Wollstonecraft essay to do, maybe give Paul a try.” Cue “Are you mad? Did you hear ‘Free as a Bird’?” based consternation.
Anyways... Jools was back on the telebox last night and if you didn’t catch it, make sure you pick it up on iPlayer here. The line-up is stellar Franz, The Specials, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Carole King all perform their hits new and old but the band that particularly caught my eye were The Mummers. Featuring the otherworldly vocals of Raissa Khan-Panni and a big band of rotating membership, their three or so minutes slot brought back images of pre-war dance halls and courtship rituals that didn’t follow the drink-drink-drink-vomit-pull-MISTAKE trend of modern day. More civilized times indeed.
If you're gonna make a Beatles reference, at least big up the re-mastered re-release of all their albums later on this year.
